Educate from the heart..

Act like what you do matter-IT DOES.

I’ve always known I wanted to be an Educator. It’s the occupation that creates all other Occupations in Life. The least payed but the most awarding and fulfilling.  Teacher is a funny word to me, anyone can be a teacher, you can teach a dog new tricks, you can teach a child right from wrong. As a teacher you instruct what is to be done. Throughout my educational journey, I have come across several teachers.

An Educator is one of those people who go above and beyond the call of duty. As an Educator you make relationships with students more importantly than the content but because of relationships Educators make with their students, the content comes alive. It is because of these Educators not working for a “paycheck”, that provide one of the most powerful weapons in the world: Education (Nelson Mandela). It’s not how much you do, but what you do that matters the most. To these Educators, I want to say Thank You.

I remember the first day I walked into her classroom.  I had Mrs. Amaya, I  can still imagine the way she looked with her silver and white hair, her long nails and her scent. She believed in her students and gave them the power to believe in themselves. Even to this day she believes in me and is patiently waiting for the day I tell her I’m an Educator.

I had Mrs. Alarcon. Mrs. Garza. Then I had Mrs. Escobar. Oh how beautiful she was, with her perfect smile that greeted us every morning and her hair that curled at the end. She was kind and fun. She taught me to always be the hardest working person in the room. She worked with me  while I struggled in Math and would read to us every morning. She let us grow into the tiny people we were becoming.

I ended up moving schools after that year, then I went into Middle School

Middle School would  not have happened without Ms. Mayon, the one who taught me excuses get you nowhere in life and you need to own up to your mistakes because it makes you a better person. Whose excuses where a P.P. problem ( personal problem) and No Sir’ee Bob where mention always.

High School was a blur but it wasn’t into my 11thgrade English Teacher Ms. Griffin  that I establish my love of writing. She taught me to believe in myself and my potential as a student and what I put on paper was worth it. She guided me into a love of Reading that I still have today. She knew what I loved and the only person I opened up to  in my writing after my Uncle’s death. After 13 oh so years I still have the purple fairy she gave me. That is what made me realize she saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself.

To every other Educator friends I have met in my life, I know you have story of why you got into the Educational Field. You educate because in a world where there is little hope, educators can be the only light for a child who is left in the dark.

This is my second year working “behind the scenes”. In an office where I miss the student interaction, where I miss working  in a classroom but like always I know God has a plan for me,
To all my  fellow Office Workers, your job is no less and no more than an Educator. You are placed in that Office to make a difference. Each student you come in contact with  whether working in the AP Office, Counselor’s Office, Nurse’s Office, Front Office  was place by God with a specific purpose. Always remember to be the person you needed when you were younger in school. Inspire and awaken the hearts of those students.

As for me, I am learning little by little that is ok to work in an Office. I fall into slumps and struggle not to get overwhelmed  with the pressure of files and paperwork because I know when the expectations begin to feel impossible, I remember because of me a student smiled, made a connection, created a relationship, became more confident and felt loved all because I stood in the hallway.

To my babies who are not Babies (so they tell me) You have the power to change the world use it to make a difference.

that gives so much to help others. And I have so many look up to you. Some people go into teaching as a career, but truly believe its God's gift to you. Continue to be the great person you are.

  2. Ashley, I’m so proud of you! Since I met you, your junior year, you have been caring, compassionate, driven, focused, and a host of other adjectives that would take me into tomorrow if I listed them all. The ones I’ve listed and so many others are the VERY reasons why I’m glad you made the choice to teach, and those little dumplings whose lives you, have and will continue to, touch are as blessed as I am to have been blessed to know you. To teach is to touch lives FOREVER! Keep up the great work!
    Ms. Griffin

Dear Broken Girl,

Am I Enough?
